Women infertility causes

Pregnancy MiracleInfertility is becoming an increasingly common problem. Worldwide it is estimated that one in seven couples face fertility challenges. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 10% of women in the United States have a hard time getting pregnant. There are many women infertility causes, and there are things that a woman can do to increase her chances of conceiving.

Infertility in women generally refers to the biological inability of a woman to get conceived or to carry a pregnancy to full term. To fertility experts, if you are under 35 years old and unable to get pregnant after 1 year of steady and unprotected intercourse (or 6 months if you are 35 or above), then very likely there’s an infertility problem to deal with. The infertility can be due to you or your partner, or both. In this article, we’ll take a look at the possible women infertility causes that might be hampering your efforts in getting pregnant.

Age factor

Age can be a very big factor, and is one of the women infertility causes that can be avoided. Nowadays many women are waiting until they’re in their mid-30s before trying to conceive, but it’s harder to conceive at that age. Fertility in women starts to decline after age 27, and drops by 50% at 35 and shrinks to 20% by 40! Women become less fertile as they get older because their eggs are older and their egg reserve becomes smaller, both of which can greatly affect her chances of becoming pregnant.

Health and lifestyle factor

Poor health and lifestyle are two areas that may cause infertility in women. Smoking is a killer, because it increases the amount of mucus around the cervix, which makes conception harder.

Weight is also an issue. Around 12% of all infertility cases are because a woman is either being underweight or overweight. Did you know that the fat cells in a woman’s body also produce the hormone estrogen? Too much body fat (overweight) will lead to too much estrogen, and the body will react to it as if it is on birth control. Too little fat (underweight) causes insufficient estrogen and disrupts the menstrual cycle. When menstrual cycle is irregular, ovulation is inadequate or even does not occur.

Reproductive system problem

Generally, there are several women infertility causes related to the reproductive system. Some of them can be treated with fertility drugs, while some may require surgical intervention (e.g. fibroids, tubul damage).

• Lack of ovulation as a result of hormonal imbalance or cyst in the ovary.

• Irregular ovulation along with poor cervical mucus, which may either damage the sperms or slow down their movement.

• Tubes fail to carry eggs from the ovary to the uterus, usually a result of scarring of the fallopian tubes caused by endometriosis, sexually transmitted disease such as gonorrhea and Chlamydia, or prior surgery.

• Embryo cannot implant on the uterine lining because of endometriosis, fibroid tumors, infections, adhesions or prior surgery.

If you have been trying to conceive for a year without any success, you should see your doctor, who will be able to determine which women infertility causes are limiting your chances of getting pregnant. Once the problem has been determined, you’ll have a much greater odds for conception with the help of infertility treatments.
